What is social enterprise?

A social enterprise is any organisation that trades goods and/or services to achieve social, environmental, economic and cultural outcomes.

Historically government (the public sector) has developed social, environmental, economic, and cultural initiatives, to be delivered in partnership with either the private sector (business) or the community sector (charities).

Social enterprises provide an alternative to traditional social service provision; defined by their structural and operational flexibility, they can develop innovative new solutions to difficult social problems.
